In the computer world, the word sniffing refers to capturing data packets sent over the network or the Internet and it's a common method used by more and more people for analyzing all the packets which go across the network. In order to be able to view all these packets, you will first need to install a specialized application for this purpose. A program which can help you here is Wireless Snif.

This simple Windows application acts as a network sniffer, allowing you to view all the data packets sent over the network, even if the packets don't address your computer directly. After installing this application using its simple installer, the user will notice the two icons on the desktop. One is the actual application and the other is an IM sniffer, which can automatically analyze and decode packets which belong to popular Internet applications, like mIRC, Yahoo Messenger, FTP, ICQ and so on. Supporting these protocols will mean that you will be able to see the people's IM conversations on the network just by capturing the received and sent packets.

When launching the actual program interface, the user will first need to select his network adapter which will be monitored. After that, he will be able to start the sniffing process using a single mouse click. During this process, all the captured packets will be displayed in real time, together with additional information regarding each one of them.

At the end of the sniffing process, the user will be able to export the list of captured packets to a regular text file, for future analysis. The same goes for the IM sniffing tool, where all the analyzed packets can be exported.

Pros

It allows you to analyze all the data packets that travel across the network. Besides that, packets that belong to popular Internet applications can be automatically analyzed. Furthermore, the list of packets can be exported to a regular text file, for later analysis.

Cons

The program requires some advanced network knowledge and experience in order to be fully used and understood. Wireless Snif allows you to easily capture all the packets that are sent and received over a network or the Internet.
